PRESLEY STEPPED OUT of the shower and promptly tripped over the fat hound dog lying on the bathroom floor. âDamn it, Elvis.â
The lazy mongrel just looked up at him with his sad eyes and set his head back down, dismissing him with no concern.
âStupid mutt.â Presley dried off, using more energy than was necessary to towel the water off his body, and jerked on a pair of dark gray pajama bottoms. The insufferable woman heâd rescued off the side of the road had him all shook up.
Sheâd cooked a good meal, but had provided pitiful company. Despite his intention of not getting any closer to her, heâd tried to start a conversation at supper. Ignoring her while sitting right across from her would have been just plain rude. For all the good it did him. Heâd walked away from supper feeling like a villain. His only concern was protecting her, doing right by her, and she acted as if heâd done something wrong. As if heâd done something to hurt her.
Twisting the towel in his hands, Presley growled. Damned women. Never could understand them. But, man, did he want to understand this one. That was the main thing worrying his mind as he tossed the towel into the hamper and stepped out into his bedroom to plop down on his big, king-sized bed. His big, lonely king-sized bed. âDonât go there, West.â
He laughed at himself, amazed by his stupidity. The last time a woman on the run had been in his care, it had all gone wrong. Heâd let his guard down, and thatâs exactly what heâd be doing if he started thinking of Amber as his while she was still another manâs target. Thatâs the only way to think of her if he wanted her to stay safe, and breathing.
He damn sure wasnât going to allow her out of his sight to go work a second job. And what the hell did she need a second job for? To leave him?
âSheâs not with you, you idiot,â he growled at himself. Still, the thought of her wanting to leave felt like a rejection. It would definitely be a loss. But what could he expect? Heâd avoided her while sheâd been on bedrest, then gotten snarly with her first thing in the morning on her first day off of it. He knew he needed to stay focused on her protection, but he needed to figure out how to do that and distance himself without being such a jerk about it, or he was going to lose her altogether. Then sheâd be out there, an easy target for Richard Carnales, and that he simply could not permit.
A scream cut through the air and Presley jerked up, his heart in his throat. Amber! He raced out of his room and up the stairs, taking them two at a time to the top. He pounded down the hall and threw open her door.
Amber twisted in the sheets, her mouth open in a scream as she flailed her arms about, defending herself from her nightmare attacker.
